PLANT CARE
Light
- The Bird of Paradise plant favors bright, indirect light
- Can tolerate filtered, direct light for a couple hours at a time, but avoid practicing this too often as the plant’s leaves can burn
- Likes a slightly shady spot in a typically well-lit room, rotate plant periodically to ensure an even light is captured all around
Water
- Keep soil slightly moist, allow it to dry out a bit in-between watering
Soil
- Plant in a well-draining, organic soil, possibly mixed with compost to promote fertility
- Don’t plant roots too deeply into soil, exposure to the top of the roots encourages flowering
- Heavy feeders, can be fertilized every two weeks throughout the summer and monthly in the winter
Toxicity
- Considered toxic to humans and animals
- Leaves and stems are mildly toxic to humans if large amount is consumed
- The ingestion of flowers and seeds can cause dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, and drowsiness
